According to SASC Manager Shilo St. Cyr, this additional funding will largely be used to continue recently started initiatives that aim at increasing the range of services offered and the reach of SASC.

Ten environmentally-focused student groups on campus have collaborated together to create a proposal outlining how they believe UBC should address matters related to sustainability in the future. This is in response to UBC’s new strategic plan.
The 2016/17 Annual Report was recently published. It included responses from a 2014 Workplace Experiences Survey, which shows that only 62 per cent of UBC faculty in 2014 would recommend UBC as a good place to work.
The President’s Excellence Chairs will be in biodiversity studies, brain health, forest bio-products, global development policy, media studies and precision oncology. The whole program will last for seven years and cost roughly over $22 million.
After almost two months of a provincial government in limbo, Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon has called on John Horgan and the BC New Democrats (BC NDP) to form government, ending the 16-year reign of the BC Liberals.
Lam announced his decision at the July 19 AMS Council meeting in closed session, which was entered upon his request. However, a public discussion about his resignation was held shortly after in the meeting.

For those at UBC who have been seriously affected by the wildfires, UBC Enrolment Services has announced that they are willing to provide financial support, and UBCO has announced that they are offering accommodations in the student residences.

As stated in one applicant’s SSC status update that was sent to The Ubyssey at the end of June, UBC was expected to have until July 15 to make the final decision due to a large number of applications.
2,047 undergraduate students participated in this year’s survey — an increase from last year’s number of 1,564 students but not as high as 2015’s number of 2,855 students. This is also the first graduate students are reintegrated into the survey.
“If someone is in an emergency they’re sent to the hospital the same day, or if they’re extremely urgent they’re sent to the access and assessment centre for care within two to five days,” said Dr. Nelson, director of UBC Student Health Services.
“We are focused on the human aspect, because once they are here, I mean, they’re here. We gotta help them right? They need help, so we help them. It’s not a political issue, it’s not up to debate, it’s simply people helping people,” said Koch.
