UBC students and alumni were among the hundred or so people who braved snow flurries and subzero temperatures to rally outside the Vancouver Art Gallery.
But while sign languages have over 70 million speakers worldwide, UBC doesn’t offer a single undergraduate sign language class — and some departments don’t even recognize ASL and its variants as a foreign language.

The UBC Vancouver Senate has recently approved a new holistic approach to student admissions that will require applicants to submit the near-entirety of their Grade 11 and 12 marks. It will also require students to submit a number of courses relevant to their program of interest.

Thursday, Thamer Almestadi was found not criminally responsible due to mental disorder for attacking a fellow UBC student in her dorm room in October 2016. Almestadi, 19, had been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
As part of its response to alumna Glynnis Kirchmeier’s human rights complaint (HRC), UBC has denied any discrimination in how it handled reports of sexual assault. The university also “reserves the right to apply to dismiss the complainant without a hearing,” but did not attach an application with the response.

On October 12, four UBC-partnered superclusters have advanced to the second round of Canada’s Innovation Superclusters Initiative. Part of the nine applicants to have been shortlisted out of 50, they will be competing to be the five recipients of $950 million over a five-year span.
