Gupta resigned from his position in August 2015, following conflict and in-fighting with the Board of Governors (BoG). Having only served 13 months of his presidency at the time, his resignation came as a shock for much of the UBC community.

The decade began with two AMS execs narrowly avoiding impeachment, after filing a human rights complaint to the UN about access to education on behalf of the AMS without consulting AMS Council.

Evans came into the year benefitting from experience with the AMS and student governance at UBC, having served as an AMS representative for the Arts Undergraduate Society and as Chair of the Human Resources committee last year. He believes that he has leveraged that experience into some early successes.

The strike notice comes after 40 days of collective bargaining failed to reach an agreement between BCRTC and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 7000, the union that represents approximately 900 SkyTrain workers in Metro Vancouver.

In June 2018, a draft of UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan was presented to the Board of Governors, intending to replace the university’s 2009 Aboriginal Strategic Plan and implement the TRC's 94 Calls to Action.
