The first 2017 AMS elections debate took place Monday afternoon, marking the first time candidates for President, VP Academic and VP External faced off in an official forum. Now, we've had some time to fact-check some of what the candidates said.

James Cohen, who is running for president, and Dario Garousian, who is running for VP External, have violated the AMS Elections Procedures and Handbook. Both candidates committed two violations after their first official campaign warning.

This year’s candidates for VP External, Sally Lin and Dario Garousian, attended this afternoon’s debate in the Lev Burkhan Theatre from 2 – 4:30 p.m. They discussed issues ranging from student engagement to transit.

There are three people vying for the position of AMS President this year — Jesse Hooton, James Cohen and Sugar Brewer — and two joke candidates, Julian “The Hooligan” Del Balso and the Cairn, all with very different platforms.

Being the only VP Academic candidate, Daniel Lam took the stage in the first AMS elections debate today unopposed. Lam is a current student senator at large with two years of both AMS Council and undergraduate society council experience.

“Advocating for improved funding to post-secondary education remains a priority for the AMS and we will be looking for all BC political parties to make this a priority in the May provincial elections,” wrote AMS VP External Kathleen Simpson.
