The fourth-year honours economics student’s platform is aimed at ensuring that Senate will have a “student-focused agenda” for the next three years, as a new set of faculty representatives begin their terms this year.
Jakob Gattinger, a third-year mining engineering student, is running to be one of five student senators-at-large in the UBC Vancouver Senate with a platform focused on mental health, a commitment to diversity and tuition consultation concerns.
Third-year economics student Ian Sapollnik is running for re-election after serving one term as arts student senator in the UBC Vancouver Senate, making it his third campaign for Senate since he first ran in 2015.
Third-year atmospheric science student Daniel Lam served on the Student Senate caucus for this past academic year, and is currently running for re-election. His platform reflects ongoing work done by student senators and several new initiatives.
Yesterday’s AMS Elections Great Debate started off with the two candidates for VP External — Sally Lin and Dario Garousian. The first question posed to both candidates asked how each of them planned on addressing transit strains for students.
A second-year commerce student, Julien Hart wants to empower clubs. This focus is motivated by his formal and informal experiences working in event-planning intensive positions such as the social chair of the Zeta Psi fraternity.
Faraz Nikzad aims to improve both the student and business sides of the AMS. This platform builds upon his experiences working with and for the AMS as the UBC Persian Club’s current president and as the former manager-on-duty for its food outlets.

This year’s candidates for VP Administration met once again this afternoon for the Great Debate. In contrast with the last one, this debate saw a deeper discussion of certain topics and more challenging questions from the audience.
Student Senate candidates Daniel Lam, Jakob Gattinger, Simran Brar, William Chen, Ian Sapollnik and Kevin Doering met on Friday for the second student Senate debate. The six candidates are each vying for one of five student-at-large seats.
Tonight marked the second and final debate for the VP Finance position, a position which only has one candidate, Alim Lakhiyalov. The event featured questions from the moderator, followed by two questions from the audience and a closing statement.
