“UBC definitely has an issue of visibility and that’s why I wanted to have an event like this,” said Blain. She also claims that although the university does promote diversity, it is in a highly tokenistic attitude. “They love [diversity] like that’s how we sell, that’s how we get the money from donors and that’s how we look good in comparison to other universities. It’s not a real celebration of all the culture and communities that exist here.”
The facility, which is slated to cost about $32.5 million, will include two turf fields and three grass fields on campus, which will serve as a home for both Whitecaps and UBC soccer teams.
Women’s volleyball team took on the McEwan University Griffins this weekend on Friday and Saturday, beating them in both games to maintain their position in the Canada West conference and tying at second with sister school UBC Okanagan.
The women’s hockey team split their weekend against the Calgary Dinos. The Thunderbirds took the first game with a score of 3-2 on Friday and fell to the same team in a double overtime 4-3.
