On weekday evenings, the walkways and buildings of UBC start to empty as students disperse out of classes, headed home for the night. Yet, in the SUB Ballroom, music is starting to play and couples are taking to the floor; class is starting for the UBC Dance Club.

The shift in Canadian government during the 1980s encouraged public-private partnerships and reduced subsidies for higher education, leading UBC down the road of private development and robbing students’ of their voice on campus.

The upcoming six-story building, currently named Totem Park Residence Infill Phase 2, is expected to hold 350 beds and is one of five student residence development projects that UBC is working on.
