When Pierre Trudeau commissioned a type of particle accelerator called a cyclotron for the centre in 1976, the then-prime minister quipped: “I don’t really know what a cyclotron is, but I am certainly very happy Canada has one.”

The SkyTrain workers’ union, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 7000 and their employer, BC Rapid Transit Company (BCRTC) bargained right until the shutdown of the Millenium and Expo Lines was scheduled to begin.
The strike will include a full system shutdown of the SkyTrain beginning at 5 a.m. on December and resuming at 5 a.m. on December 13.
Evans came into the year benefitting from experience with the AMS and student governance at UBC, having served as an AMS representative for the Arts Undergraduate Society and as Chair of the Human Resources committee last year. He believes that he has leveraged that experience into some early successes.
The strike notice comes after 40 days of collective bargaining failed to reach an agreement between BCRTC and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 7000, the union that represents approximately 900 SkyTrain workers in Metro Vancouver.
